Are you tired of your books on the shelf?
What kinds of ebooks are free online?
This is the question everyone wants to know. It really all stems back to what is copyrighted. If a book still has an active copyright on it, then there is someone who should be profiting from it. Those books are obviously not free. Unless they are giving them away for a certain promotional purpose, most writers want to get paid.
Luckily for us all, there are sights that convert classics with expired copyrights into ebooks and then make them available for downloading. Introducing Project Gutenberg at http://www.gutenberg.org/ .
Right now there are 30,000 free ebooks available on Project Gutenberg’s website. You can even see a recap of the top 100 downloads for the week here: http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/scores/top . The top downloads frequently cover a wide range of subjects from Manual of Surgery to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
They are always looking for volunteers to proofread books as part of their two step process of conversion from a hard copy book to an online download. You can volunteer to be part of this historical process here: http://www.pgdp.net/c/ .
You can browse their online book catalog by author, title, language or most recently uploaded. http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/ What a great resource available to us all. Be sure to donate!
